ANTS

There are over 12,500 species of ants that have been classified all over the world. Roughly over 1,300 ant species are known in Australia but there's only a handful that we commonly see as pests such as the well known black ant, bulldog ant, garden ant etc. These ants primarily occur in human habitations, where their presence is often problematic causing electrical problems, destroying gardens, spoiling food and some will sting or bite.

Ants in large groups are frustrating especially when they invade your home to forage for a source of food. They're attracted to food such as sweets, bread, pet food and even liquid spills. Ants are social insects, meaning they live in large colonies or groups and they do in fact help the environment... But we're taking an estimated guess and believe you want to cut straight to the chase, right? If you would like more information on ants, feel free to visit this site:  http://www.termidor.com.au/all-about-ants/ants-in-australia

Well here's a question for you readers;
"If you notice a single ant roaming your home, say your kitchen for instance, is it a pest problem?"
Surely not, since it's just a single ant right? ..

An ant foraging for a food source will leave behind an invisible pheromone trail (chemical trail), naked to the human eye, to find their way back from their nesting place to the food source. Pretty fascinating huh? This chemical attracts other ants to the smell resulting in a large group of ants marching its way to the food source via the pheromone trail. Even if you were to destroy all the ants invading your home and business, the scent of the trail will still be found by other ants in the colony.

PREVENTION OF ANT INFESTATION

Most pest ants only come into your home or business in search for food. They're easily attracted to anything that's sweet and sticky. There are several ways in preventing ants from infesting your home or business.

First and foremost, hygiene is important and crucial to every home and business. Food preparation and eating areas should be cleaned up entirely and kept free of any food particles and waste. Any leftover foods be stored in airtight containers or in the refridgerator. Clear up all food and liquid spills immediately. If you have a pet, clear away any food that isn't eaten straight away and sweep up any food crumbs under and around their bowl. By sealing all cracks and crevices around your doors and window frames, you're blocking off the entry points to the ants. Also to make sure all garbage bins are not overflowing and tightly closed.
