RODENTS - MICE AND RATS
The term “rodent” encompasses both mice and rats. Rodents are night-traveling creatures, known to eat and contaminate food as well as damage buildings and other property by gnawing and burrowing in structures. They may also spread diseases (such as salmonella) that affect people and pets.
Mice are commonly found in homes and can live for up to 18 months. They range in length from 5 to 8 inches and can weigh up to 1 ounce. Females can produce anywhere from 36 to 192 offspring per year. Rats, specifically the Norway Rat, are commonly found in suburban areas of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. They range in length from 13 to 18 inches and can weigh up to 11 ounces. Females can produce anywhere from 35 to 85 offspring annually; the average rat will live up to a little under a year. Rats have been known to transmit disease such as the plague and tuberculosis.
Rodents have sharp incisors that they use to gnaw wood, break into food, and bite predators. Most eat seeds or plants, though some have more varied diets. Some species eat seeds that are stored by people and are blamed for spreading disease.

PREVENTION OF RODENT INFESTATION
Signs of rodents include:
If you see any of these signs it is important to take action quickly and stop the problem from getting worse. If possible, it is also ideal to identify where these rodents are entering your home or living space and where they may be lingering. Generally they will prefer kitchen areas which provide them with food sources and can be accessible through gaps around the utility lines in the kitchen or behind kitchen appliances such as the refrigerator and stove.
Since rodents flourish where food and moisture are readily available, sanitation is an important step in prevention and control. Empty soft drink bottles, cardboard boxes and paper bags should not be allowed to accumulate. Food containers should be sealed and any crumbs or spillage should be cleaned up.
- The presence of fecal matter – “droppings”
- Visual identification of live or dead rodents
- Visible signs of destruction to buildings and other property such as food items

RODENT CONTROL & EXTERMINATION EASTERN SUBURBS
The best way to eliminate a rodent infestation is to stop them from entering your home. Even if you already have a mouse or rat problem or live in an apartment building, exclusion of these pests will be the best long-term solution for a rodent problem. At Eastern Suburbs Exterminator, we have teams that are extensively trained and certified to inspect, treat, and seal up all potential points of entry. Under Eastern Suburbs Exterminator’s Rodent Proofing Program, our teams will check and treat all openings around utility lines, service conduits such as water pipes, electric wires, air-conditioning units, drain pipes and vents, as well as checking for broken windows and unscreened vents. One great thing about this method is that it uses absolutely no chemicals.
For proofing or other treatment needs, our inspectors are available for on-site inspections between the hours of 8:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Saturday.
